Vettel Challenge at Monaco Grand Prix

By: MK

Sebastian Vettel took the trophy at the Spanish Grand Prix and claimed his fourth victory of five races; races full of adrenaline and breathtaking action. For the champion; the challenge at the Spanish soil was just an advancement of the real race about to come...Monaco. Vettel believes the Monaco Grand Prix will be like traveling into the unknown. This is one of the most important events in the calendar in motorsports world; the expected race this weekend will be a challenge for many of the competitors, those new and those familiarized with the track. The new rules of this season could prove to be a new kind of challenge for the drivers and turn the occasion in a real bingo game.

The Monaco Grand Prix will not only be a challenge for the competitors, but also for tyre manufacturers and car engineers. Pirelli will unveil the first timer super-soft tire this year and they are most concerned about how bad the tyre will degrade, so the pit-stop guys will be busy. Also, the DRS (Drag Reduction System) or moveable rear wing that helps overtaking, the drivers are allowed to use it at the short main straight. Some of these DRS where tested in the Spaniard course but the overtaking at the Monaco track always has been very difficult. The DRS is a dangerous device if misused; so it has a section in the new rules for its usage. Around all these upgrades, there are unanswered questions for Vettel; mostly with the tires conditions and the strategy to follow, Vettel considers this year will be more complicated than in the past. By tradition Monaco overtaking has been difficult, but it remains positive that this year is possible due to the tyres.

For Vettel, while some drivers may be on the old tyres, others will be on new tyres and this will mark a big difference just as seen in the past races. Also he is happy with the use of the DRS in race mode but not in practice. He acknowledges that every driver thinks the same; “they will look forward to go as fast as they can, but have in mind that using the rear wing could be very dangerous in some places of the course”. Vettel believes that there could be some overtaking, but mostly because to the tyres and not the rear wing at all. Monaco is one of the most important races of the year, every driver dreams to win this course. This time it will be packed with more action than the past years and the Fans will be more involved with the race. Motorsports fans could be sure that this coming Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix will be like no other.
